How to Measure Your Own Health

Most people dread going to the doctor and undergoing a physical check up. Most times, people prolong their agonies and only visit the doctor’s clinic when the symptoms worsen. However, when it comes to our health, one must be his own advocate. It is important to pay attention to small warning signs that may indicate a bigger underlying health problem. And in any kind of illness, early intervention is important to a full recovery.

Here are a few warning signs that might indicate that you may need a thorough medical check up with your physician.

how to measure your own health

  • A warning sign of an underlying health problem is unintentional weight loss (AAFP). In the worse case scenario, unintentional weight loss may be an indication of onset of cancer (, thus it is very important to pay attention to it, especially if one has lost more than 10 pounds in the last six months.
  • On the other hand, unexplained weight gain may also be a warning sign of a health problem ( /
  • Another warning sign is experiencing frequent abdominal pain or the feeling of being bloated or becoming full very quickly. It is important to take note of the frequency, location of the pain as well as the severity of the pain (
  • Some people may have sudden craving for ice cubes or only wish to drink fluids and water, and often loses appetite. Additionally, if a person experiences change in his sense of taste, this might be an indication of a serious illness and the person should seek immediate medical attention (NY Times)
  • Additionally, if the person has unexplained bruises all over his body, this might also be a warning sign of illness such as leukaemia (
  • Another warning sign is the feeling of always being tired or feeling faint. He may also feel low in energy, loss of motivation and inability to focus. If a person experiences frequent headaches even after waking up in the morning, this might be a warning sign of a serious health condition (
  • If a person misses bowel movement, this might indicate a problem with his digestive system. Regular bowel movements should be daily ( .
  • There are also other factors that might increase the susceptibility of a person to illnesses. If a person is a smoker or living with a smoker, this may increase the chance for him to develop lung cancer (
  • If a person lives a sedentary lifestyle and exercises less than ninety minutes a week, this also increases his risk to illnesses such as hypertension and heart problems ( /

These are just basic warning signs but can be a good gauge of a person’s health. One must pay attention to small warning signs so that further tests and diagnostics can be done in order to identify health conditions every before they worsen. Dismissing these small symptoms can prove to be very costly once the illness has become too severe which may later on cost one’s life. Furthermore, it is important to have regular check ups with your physician to prevent such illnesses.

Raspberry Ketone Optimal Dosage for Humans

Raspberry Ketone Supplements

Raspberry Ketone supplements have become increasingly popular since Dr. Oz mentioned them on his show touting them as a fat burner in a bottle.  Since last year, the number of products containing this supplement ingredient has skyrocketed.

For those who’re considering taking raspberry ketone supplements, it should first be noted that to date, there has not been a single study which shows that they actually do work to promote weight loss in humans.  Instead all of the current research on raspberry ketone supplements suggests that they help prevent weight gain and fat accumulation in rats who’re fed a high fat diet.

Raspberry Ketone Dosage

In the few rodent studies available, the rats/mice were fed dosages ranging from 0.5 to 2% of their body weight with a dose response relationship demonstrated.   i.e. the rodents fed the higher dosages demonstrated better results.

When it comes to adapting doses from rodent models, the generally accepted method is simply not to adjust the weight difference on a mg/kg basis from rats to humans.  Rather, other factors such as the differences in body surface area are also taken into account.

For humans, the typical dosage based on these calculations work out to a range from 50 mg to 200 mg per day.

Natural Arthritis Remedies: Fact or Fiction?

Arthritis is one of the most common medical conditions for which people seek alternative or natural remedies.  Why?  It’s obvious that conventional treatment options for osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis are simply inadequate.  Despite this, there still exists a fair amount of skepticism as to whether or not natural arthritis remedies actually work!

In terms of conventional treatment options, the outlook is fairly bleak.  Typical options simply offer some degree of temporary pain relief.  You can talk to your doctor about taking pain medication such as acetaminophen, or if you’re healthy enough to handle the side effects of NSAIDS, you might try those.  After that, you can get joint injections for certain joints such as the knee with options including corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid.  Steroids actually destroy your joints while providing pain relief, so there a last ditched option prior to joint replacement or other forms of surgery.

Alternative treatments include popular choices such as glucosamine sulfate, s-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), or devi’s claw extract.  For a detailed discussion of the science behind these supplements see more by Dr. Jarret Morrow here.

Energy Drinks Side Effects?

Over the past few years, the popularity of energy drinks has literally skyrocketed.  One related concern for many parents involves the vast quantity of these drinks that they’re children consume.

Do you have an adolescent who drinks 2 or more energy drinks on a daily basis?  If so you’re probably concerned about the potential side effects that may result.

According to recent research, here’s a list of possible side effects from energy drinks:

  1. Seizures have been reported
  2. Stroke
  3. Heart related problems:  arrhythmia , heart attacks, increase in blood pressure
  4. Seizures

Reviews of studies on Energy Drink Safety:

Again to corroborate previously supplied information, a review of studies listed on Medline regarding the safety of Energy Drinks yielded the following pieces of information.

First, from a study published in June of 2010 in the journal, The Physician and Sportsmedicine:

Guarana, which contains caffeine in addition to small amounts of theobromine, theophylline, and tannins, is also recognized as safe by the FDA, although it may lead to caffeine toxicity when combined with caffeine.

The combination of caffeine and guarana is one potential concern though each ingredient is generally regarded as safe when used alone.

Most energy drinks also contain sugar in an amount that exceeds the maximum recommended daily amount.

The amount of sugar found in energy drinks can be quite alarming.

Energy drinks combined with alcohol are also gaining popularity in young adults, which poses significant concerns about health risks.

Though there hasn’t been a wealth of research on this topic, the combination of Red Bull and Vodka, can be dangerous particularly since younger adults often consume an excess of both while drinking.

Other health concerns related to consumption of energy drinks include case reports of seizures and cardiac arrest following energy drink consumption and dental enamel erosion resulting from the acidity of energy drinks.

Dental enamel erosion isn’t often discussed, but it can be a concern given the PH of energy drinks.

Raw Food Diet Overview?

Over the past few years, one diet that’s become increasingly popular is the Raw Food Diet.  While some will say that the raw diet or raw food diet as it’s alternately referred to is simply a passing fad, others will take offense to that statement.  Raw foodies as they call themselves are very passionate about their meal plans.  For them, eating raw food has more than simple health benefits or connotations as the raw food experience encapsulates more of a lifestyle choice as well as a philosophical belief system.

Raw foodies will often suggest that cooking food destroys many of the nutrients that are inherently present in food.  As well, they’ll point to the potential dangers of cooked and processed food throwing around terms like ‘toxins’ which can damage your body.

Is this just another passing fad or is there some merit to the raw food diet?

Nine natural remedies for gout?

Gout can be a painful condition which commonly affects the large toe.  Gout itself has gotten a bad rap as the ‘disease of kings’ over the years because it’s associated with your intake of purines found in red meat.

It’s actually a metabolic condition which means there are important dietary factors associated with gout.

Research has long show that one of the natural remedies for lowering your uric acid levels is simply consuming bing sweet cherries.  Accordingly, consuming 280 g of bing sweet cherries has been shown to have possible benefits.  It’s speculated that the vitamin C found in these cherries is largely responsible for this effect.
